Understanding NDIS Household Tasks Support

Professional support worker assisting with household cleaning tasks

Household Tasks, formally known as Assist-Household Tasks in your NDIS plan, is an essential support that helps you maintain a clean, safe, and comfortable home environment. This service falls under the Core Supports budget and is designed to assist with domestic activities that may be difficult or impossible to complete independently due to your disability.

At MaxAbility Services, we understand that your home is your sanctuary—a place where you should feel comfortable, safe, and proud. Our household tasks support goes beyond simple cleaning; it's about creating an environment that supports your health, wellbeing, and independence. We recognize that maintaining a home can be physically demanding, time-consuming, or require skills that are challenging when living with disability, and we're here to ensure your living space meets your needs.

Our approach to household tasks support is flexible, respectful, and focused on your preferences. We work with you to understand how you like your home maintained, respect your belongings and personal space, and deliver services that fit seamlessly into your life. Whether you need comprehensive weekly cleaning, assistance with specific heavy-duty tasks, or support with laundry and linen changes, we provide reliable, professional service that you can depend on.

Comprehensive Household Services

Our Household Tasks support encompasses a wide range of domestic activities, all tailored to your specific needs and preferences. Services can be customized based on what's most important to you and what's funded in your NDIS plan.

General Cleaning

Dusting, vacuuming, mopping floors, cleaning bathrooms, kitchen cleaning, wiping surfaces, and maintaining overall cleanliness throughout your home.

Laundry Services

Washing, drying, folding, and putting away clothes and linens. Changing bed linen and making beds. Special care for delicate items.

Kitchen Maintenance

Washing dishes, cleaning appliances, organizing cupboards and pantry, managing food storage, and keeping the kitchen hygienic.

Organization and Decluttering

Help with organizing spaces, managing clutter, creating accessible storage solutions, and maintaining order throughout your home.

Waste Management

Taking out rubbish and recycling, managing bins, and ensuring proper waste disposal according to local council requirements.

Light Maintenance

Changing light bulbs, small repairs within capability, reporting maintenance issues, and helping coordinate with tradespeople.

Important Note: NDIS Household Tasks support covers cleaning and maintenance tasks that are specifically related to or made more difficult by your disability. It doesn't cover general home maintenance that any homeowner or tenant would be responsible for, such as lawn mowing, garden maintenance, or major repairs (unless these are specifically related to disability requirements and approved in your plan).

Our staff come equipped with professional cleaning supplies and equipment. If you have preferences for particular products (perhaps you're sensitive to certain chemicals or prefer eco-friendly options), we're happy to accommodate these requests.

The Health and Wellbeing Benefits of a Clean Home

Maintaining a clean home environment is about much more than appearances—it has significant implications for your physical health, mental wellbeing, and quality of life.

Physical Health and Safety: A clean home reduces the risk of illness, allergies, and respiratory issues caused by dust, mold, and bacteria. Regular cleaning prevents pest infestations, removes trip hazards, and creates a safer environment, particularly important if you have mobility challenges or use assistive equipment. Clean bathrooms and kitchens reduce the risk of infections, while regular laundry ensures you have clean, comfortable clothing and bedding.

Mental Health and Emotional Wellbeing: The state of your living environment significantly affects your mental health. Living in clutter or mess can increase stress, anxiety, and feelings of being overwhelmed. Conversely, a clean, organized space promotes relaxation, improves mood, and creates a sense of control and accomplishment. For many people, knowing their home is clean and well-maintained provides peace of mind and reduces worry.

Social Participation: When you're confident about the state of your home, you're more likely to invite friends and family to visit, host social gatherings, or accept support services in your home. This social connection is vital for wellbeing and helps combat the isolation that many people with disability experience. A clean home removes a barrier to social participation.

Independence and Dignity: Having a clean, well-maintained home contributes to your sense of independence and dignity. It allows you to focus your energy on the things that matter most to you—work, education, hobbies, relationships—rather than being exhausted or overwhelmed by household chores that are difficult due to your disability.

Quality, Reliability, and Respect

At MaxAbility Services, we've built our reputation on delivering household services that consistently exceed expectations. Our commitment goes beyond simply cleaning—it's about building trust, respecting your home, and providing a service you can genuinely rely on.

Professional, Trustworthy Staff: Every member of our household support team undergoes thorough screening including police checks, NDIS Worker Screening, and reference checks. They receive comprehensive training not just in cleaning techniques, but in working respectfully in people's homes, understanding disability support needs, and maintaining confidentiality. We carefully match staff with participants based on personality and preferences to ensure a comfortable working relationship.

Consistency and Reliability: We understand how disruptive it can be when support doesn't show up or changes constantly. We assign consistent workers to your home so you build familiarity and don't have to repeatedly explain your preferences. If your regular worker is unavailable, we ensure you're notified in advance and only send replacement workers who've been thoroughly briefed about your needs and preferences.

Respect for Your Home and Privacy: Your home is your personal space, and we treat it with the respect it deserves. Our staff understand boundaries, follow your house rules, respect your possessions, and maintain strict confidentiality. We work efficiently and unobtrusively, minimizing disruption to your day. If you're not home during cleaning, we follow your security procedures carefully and always leave your home secure.

Quality Assurance: We conduct regular quality checks, gather your feedback, and address any concerns promptly. Our supervisors maintain ongoing communication with both staff and participants to ensure service quality remains consistently high. If something's not right, we want to know about it so we can fix it immediately.

Flexible Service Delivery: We offer flexible scheduling to suit your lifestyle—weekly, fortnightly, or custom schedules based on your needs and budget. We can adjust service times if your circumstances change, increase or decrease hours as needed, and accommodate special requests for one-off deep cleans or specific tasks.

How Household Tasks Funding Works

Understanding how household tasks are funded through your NDIS plan helps you make informed decisions about how to use this support effectively.

Funding Location in Your Plan: Household Tasks funding is included in your Core Supports budget, specifically under "Assist-Household Tasks." The amount allocated depends on your assessed needs, living situation, and the impact of your disability on your ability to complete household tasks. During plan development or review, it's important to clearly articulate your needs for household support to ensure adequate funding is included.

What's Considered Reasonable and Necessary: The NDIS funds household tasks support that is reasonable and necessary due to your disability. This means the tasks must be more difficult for you to complete because of your disability (not just because you'd prefer not to do them), and the level of support must be reasonable (for example, a two-bedroom apartment wouldn't typically require 20 hours per week of cleaning).

Frequency and Duration: How often you receive household support depends on your funding and needs. Some participants have weekly services, others fortnightly or monthly. The duration of each visit depends on the size of your home and the tasks to be completed. We work with you to develop a schedule that keeps your home comfortable within your available funding.

Combining with Other Supports: Household Tasks funding is separate from, but can complement, other NDIS supports. For example, you might have funding for household tasks (cleaning), Assist-Personal Activities (help with laundry and putting clothes away), and Development Life Skills (learning to maintain your home). We can help you understand how these different supports work together efficiently.

Specialized Services for Unique Situations

Beyond standard household cleaning, we understand that some participants have specialized needs that require adapted approaches or additional support.

Hoarding and Extreme Clutter: For participants who struggle with hoarding or severe clutter, we provide compassionate, non-judgmental support. We work gradually and respectfully, understanding that attachments to possessions are complex. Our approach focuses on safety, working at your pace, and connecting you with specialized therapeutic support when needed. We've helped many participants reclaim their living spaces in a way that respects their dignity and builds their confidence.

Allergen Reduction and Special Cleaning Needs: For participants with severe allergies, respiratory conditions, or immune system concerns, we can provide specialized cleaning that focuses on allergen reduction, uses hypoallergenic products, and employs HEPA filtration vacuums. We can also accommodate sensory sensitivities, using unscented products or scheduling services at times that minimize sensory overwhelm.

Moving and Settling In: When you're moving to a new home, the process can be overwhelming. We can provide extra support during this transition, helping with packing, unpacking, setting up your new home, and establishing routines in your new space. This support can make the difference between a stressful move and a successful transition.

Post-Hospitalization Deep Cleaning: After hospital stays or periods when you've been unable to maintain your home, we can provide thorough cleaning to restore your home to a comfortable state. This ensures you're returning to a clean, welcoming environment that supports your recovery.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to be home during cleaning?

This is entirely your choice. Some participants prefer to be home and involved, others prefer to schedule cleaning when they're out. If you're not home, we'll need a key or access code, and we'll ensure your home is secure when we leave. We follow strict protocols to protect your security and privacy.

What if I have pets?

We're happy to work in homes with pets! We just ask that you let us know about any pets in advance so we can ensure staff members aren't allergic and are comfortable with animals. If your pet becomes stressed during cleaning, we can discuss strategies like confining them to a particular room or scheduling cleaning when you can be home to manage your pet.

Can you help with organizing and not just cleaning?

Absolutely. Many participants need help with organization, decluttering, and creating systems that make it easier to maintain their home. We can work with you to organize cupboards, set up filing systems, create accessible storage, and establish routines. This is particularly valuable because good organization makes ongoing maintenance much easier.

What happens if something gets broken or damaged?

While our staff are extremely careful, accidents can occasionally happen. We maintain comprehensive insurance that covers any damage or breakage. If something is damaged, we document it immediately, notify you right away, and work to repair or replace the item. Our priority is resolving any issues quickly and fairly.

Can the same person who does household tasks help with personal care?

Potentially yes, if you have both types of support in your plan. Having the same worker provide multiple types of support can be convenient and comfortable since you build a stronger relationship. However, the supports are billed separately to the appropriate budget categories in your plan. We can discuss whether combined services make sense for your situation.
